Tralee trainer Tom Cooper was among the winners at Kilbeggan on Sunday when Mento, carrying the pale blue silks of prominent owner Paul Byrne, responded to the urgings of jockey Shane O’Callaghan and last home by three-quarters of a length.
A 10-1 chance, this was the winner’s first attempt over hurdles having been well beaten in both his bumper starts. He showed plenty of grit, too, in fending off a number of pursuers in the closing stages. More success can’t be too far away this summer.
