Ballyduff win while Causeway & Ballyheigue draw in County Hurling Championship

Causeway and Ballyheigue have drawn in the Garvey’s Supervalu County Senior Hurling Championship.

At Austin Stack Park it ended Causeway 1-18 Ballyheigue 0-21.

It was 3 points apiece after 5 minutes. Causeway led 5 points to 4 at the ten minute mark, and scored the next 3 to go ahead by double scores. When Causeway’s Paul McGrath scored his third point, the gap was 6 after 23 minutes; 11 points to 5. Colin Walsh put over for Ballyheigue to cut the lead to 5. At the break it was Causeway 0-12 Ballyheigue 6, Ballyheigue having played against the wind in that opening period.

Causeway goaled inside the first minute of the second period, Billy Lyons netting. That gave them breathing space, and it was 1-14 to 10 points ten minutes into the half. With ten minutes to go it was 1-16 to 0-13. Ballyheigue got the gap down to 1 at 1-17 to 19 points, with just 5 minutes remaining. A Colin Walsh free gave Ballyheigue the chance to draw level and he duly obliged. Philip Lucid then pointed Ballyheigue in front. However, a Paul McGrath free brought Causeway level at 1-18 to 0-21. Brandon Barrett had a chance in the last minute of added on time to win it for Causeway but his effort drifted just wide.

In Group 1 Ballyduff scored a late winner to defeat Lixnaw 1-18 to 1-17.

2 points from frees by Padraig Boyle bookended 2 Lixnaw scores, leaving it 2 all after 5 minutes. Boyle’s 4th point gave his side the lead by 4 points to 3. Lixnaw equalised, then went in front through Shane Conway; 0-5 to 0-4 on 14 minutes. It was 6 to 5 in the 20th minute when Mikey Kelliher goaled for Lixnaw. 2 minutes out from half time it was 1-7 to 0-7, Shane Conway putting Lixnaw 3 ahead from a sideline cut. On the stroke of half time Conway pointed from his own 45 which meant Lixnaw led by 1-10 to 0-7 against Ballyduff, who played the first half against the wind.

13 minutes into the second half, Lixnaw had maintained their 6 point advantage; 1-13 to 0-10. They were 7 up at the 3/4 stage; 1-14 to 10 points. Shane Conway was responsible for 11 of those points. Ballyduff hit back with a Luke Rochford goal. Heading into the final ten minutes it was 1-16 to 1-11 in favour of Lixnaw. The gap was 3 at 1-17 to 1-14 with 6 minutes to go. Back to back Ballyduff points meant their was one between the sides entering 3 added on minutes. John Curtain equalised for Ballyduff. Kevin Goulding’s first score of the encounter then had Ballyduff in front at 1-18 to 1-17.
