Saturday was a fairly busy one both locally and outside of the county as well as off the course. Firstly, the Munster U16 Matchplay event saw Kerry representation in the latter stages of all three events as Listowel’s Shona Griffin would reach the final of the Girls event.
She had defeated her club-mate Mary Walsh in the semi-finals before losing out to Tipperary’s Sarah Ryan in the decider. The Boys Championship event meanwhile saw Deerpark duo Fionn McMonagle and Aodhan O’Halloran reach the semi-finals before losing out to Fermoy duo Cillian Corcoran and Conor Ronan respectively with Ronan winning the event overall afterwards.
The Boys Plate event meanwhile would see Sean Keane of Listowel make that final but he was defeated in the decider by Crosshaven’s Harry Duggan. The U16 action switches to a local setting this weekend with the County Strokeplay taking place in Listowel on Saturday morning. Saturday also saw Deerpark’s Connie O’Sullivan Jnr finish fifth in the National O55 Intermediate Strokeplay Championship in Rochfortbridge in Westmeath with a score of five under par, five shots off the winning score of 10 under par on the day.

Closer to home Castleisland held their Scratch Cup events last Saturday, this being a significant staging for the club coming as it does in their 60th Anniversary Year. Their Senior event- now named the Pat Mitchell Memorial Scratch Cup- saw Aidan O’Connor from the host club triumph with a score of 17 under par, one ahead of club-mate James Dignan with Michael Conway of Tralee shooting -15 in third and John McGrath of Deerpark fourth on 14 under. The Intermediate event meanwhile saw a three way tie on eight under par between Listowel’s Ger Guerin, Tralee’s John O’Regan and Deerpark’s Gearóid Cronin with Guerin winning on countback ahead of both O’Regan and Cronin.
The Junior event for the Lorna Looney-Brosnan Cup was won by Bernard Tangney from the host club with a terrific score of 12 under par, five ahead of club-mate John Clifton on seven under with Barry Kavanagh from the Ranges in Cork finishing third on five under par. The Ladies Gross prize was on by Deerpark’s Eileen McCarthy with +2 as Andrea Stanalev of the host club was the winner of the Ladies Nett on 87. Also last Saturday night our ‘Songo’ fundraiser took place in Tralee and it proved to be massive success in raising funds for our Inter-County teams as we thank both Catriona and Lisa O’Connor for their efforts in organising the night itself.
This Sunday is a big one as the Munster Adult Strokeplay Qualifiers will take place in Castleisland with spots in the Finals in Deerpark on the weekend of July 19th on offer. The County Board will finalise details of the timesheet nearer the weekend but our best wishes to all involved with a reminder that the event is a dress code competition.
Finally, the County Board would like to offer its sympathies to Deerpark’s James Foley on the death of his mother Eileen in the past week. May she Rest in Peace.
