Former Olympic athlete Chemmy Alcott was hospitalised with a collapsed lung after executing a botched front flip into a lake while on holiday in France.
The 44-year-old BBC Sport presenter uploaded a video to Instagram on Thursday showing her diving off a five-metre platform before suffering a heavy landing and needing medical intervention.
Her social media post also included pictures showing her receiving hospital treatment for the injury, which required the insertion of a chest drain.
Providing a voiceover on the footage, Alcott commented: “Most people badly time a front flip off a five-metre platform and get winded.
“I apparently don’t do things by halves.
“A collapsed lung, a chest drain and a very expensive lesson in rotation.”
Writing in her caption, she remarked that the situation “escalated quickly”, writing: “One badly timed front flip. One very hard landing. One collapsed lung. One chest drain.
“And a few more hospital overnights than were on the holiday itinerary…
“I absolutely loved Annecy… but I’m not entirely sure it loved me back.”
According to the NHS, a pneumothorax, or collapsed lung, is a medical issue that takes place when air becomes trapped in the cavity between the lung and the chest wall.
Alcott is a former ski champion who enjoyed a distinguished career on the slopes, securing her place in history as the first and only British female skier to win a run during a World Cup race.
The sportswoman won seven British National titles and represented her country at several Winter Olympic Games before stepping away from professional competition in 2014 owing to the physical and psychological toll on her body.
She subsequently built a career in broadcasting, joining the team of magazine show Ski Sunday as a presenter in 2020.
Alcott additionally featured in the BBC’s coverage of this year’s Winter Games, hosted across Milan and Cortina. Team GB finished 15th in the medal table at the Games after winning five medals, including three golds.
Matt Weston won two of those gold medals, with his second triumph coming alongside Tabitha Stoecker in the skeleton mixed team event, while Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale secured gold in the mixed relay snowboard cross event.
