Warm tributes were paid to the late Malachy Walsh at the presentation of the Dr Crokes GAA Club Golf Society President’s Prize in Scotts Hotel following the outing at Kenmare Golf Club on Saturday. A lifelong Dr Crokes stalwart , Malachy died suddenly on 12th August, 2023 while playing at a club golf outing in Kenmare. Society President Matt O’Neill’s Prize was once again dedicated in memory of Malachy and the event was won by John Hurley, who was presented with the prize by Malachy’s daughter, Stephanie Quirke, and his sister Sheila Galvin along with Maurice O’Donoghue (Scotts Hotel, sponsor) and Society President Matt O’Neill.
During the course of the speeches Malachy Walsh was remembered as the quintessential Dr Crokes member, as a player, officer, lotto organiser and a volunteer. He had undertaken innumerable tasks that were so demanding in such a big club and when his own playing days ended, Malachy served in a number of positions, including being part of the senior management team and, later, as treasurer and the driving force behind the weekly fundraising lotto. Golf Society President Matt O’Neill recalled Malachy’s remarkable lifelong commitment to the black and amber and being an integral part of the Dr Crokes community. Malachy’s daughter Stephanie Quirke also spoke warmly about her late father and how much the Crokes meant to him.
The results of the President’s Prize were as follows.
John Hurley (overall winner), Vincent Casey (second), Thomas Bracker O’Regan (third), Eamonn Fitzgerald (fourth)
And Brendan Keogh (fifth). Category prizes were won by Liam Hartnett, Ross Brosnan and Matt O’Neill.
Front nine went to Joey Sheehan and the back nine was won by David Byrne.
