Two Kerry under-20 All-Ireland winning footballers have reportedly been offered contracts by an AFL club.
According to today’s Irish Examiner, Ballyduff’s Evan Boyle and Austin Stacks’ Daniel Kirby have been approached by an Australian side.
Both players were key figures in Kerry’s All-Ireland under-20 final victory over Tyrone and were each named on the under-20 Team of the Year.
Kerry GAA chairman Pat “The Bag” O’Sullivan reacted to the news on Kerry Today.
He said Kerry players have a strong appeal for AFL clubs because of their athleticism, skill level and footballing intelligence.
Kerry currently have four players contracted to AFL clubs: Mark O’Connor of Dingle with Geelong, Cillian Burke of Milltown-Castlemaine with Geelong, Rob Monahan of Kilmoyley with Carlton, and Ben Murphy of Austin Stacks with Brisbane Lions.
O’Sullivan says he would like to see the GAA reach an arrangement with Australian Rules organisations around the recruitment of young Irish players.
