Everton’s £40m deal with Monaco for Folarin Balogun collapsed after the transfer window shut after the United States striker walked away from the move at the 11th hour.
The Premier League side had reached an agreement to sign the 25-year-old but the forward’s medical threw up an issue and Everton looked to renegotiate the agreement.
However, Balogun then decided that he did not want to join Everton after all, leaving David Moyes with only one senior striker after Beto was sold to Fiorentina earlier on deadline day.
The Toffees have resigned Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City after selling Iliman Ndiaye to the FA Cup winners for £60m.
Everton explored a late move for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee but their offer of a season-long loan was rejected, leaving Thierno Barry as Everton’s only striker.
Monaco needed to sell on deadline day but the collapse of their deal for Balogun will not revive Chelsea’s pursuit of midfielder Lamine Camara.
Chelsea are said to be furious after Monaco pulled the plug on a £47m deal for the 22-year-old midfielder after the Blues had sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125m.
Everton have ended their long search for a new right-back by signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon for around £4.2m.
The former Arsenal player has signed a three-year contract at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
