In front of a packed crowd of 100,023 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Brisbane Lions secured a dramatic seven-point victory over the Fremantle Dockers on Saturday to claim their third consecutive Australian Football League premiership.
Key forwards Logan Morris and Charlie Cameron shared six goals to guide the Lions to an extraordinary 14.12 (96) – 12.17 (89) comeback victory in the Grand Final, recreating their famous 2001-03 dynasty with a second three-peat.
Brisbane snatched four goals in the closing four minutes to overturn a 17-point deficit, with Morris putting the Lions ahead in the final minute after claiming a strong contested mark before subsequently putting the contest beyond reach with a snap from 40 metres out.
“My boys have got a stack of heart and know how to fight to the end… Now we’ve got three premierships in a row to show for it,” Lions coach Chris Fagan said.
Ladder-topping Fremantle, playing in their first Grand Final since 2013, were undaunted in the first half and forced the defending champions into over-possession and risky central play, leaving the teams level at 43 points apiece at the interval.
Momentum shifted to the Dockers during the third term, but a leg injury to captain Alex Pearce left a void in their defence, which Brisbane capitalised on with three straight goals to cut Fremantle’s lead to 10 at the final break.
“I thought we were in a bit of trouble, I’m not going to lie,” Lions on-baller Will Ashcroft said, having racked up 31 disposals and three goal assists. “But it’s crazy, the swings of momentum in big games.”
Late majors from Michael Frederick and Patrick Voss (three goals) placed the Dockers in control, but they were left to rue a dreadful miss right in front of goal by Josh Treacy that kept Brisbane in the game.
Cameron booted his third to begin the recovery, before a quick follow-up from midfielder Zac Bailey in the closing stages set the stage for Morris to guide his side to their sixth Australian Rules top-flight title, denying Fremantle their first AFL premiership in the process.
“If there’s one thing I know about this group and this club, we won’t give up, we’ll fight and we’ll be back here again,” Pearce said.
