While there was no competitive fixture last weekend, the Munster Secondary Schools event took place on Thursday last (September 24th) in St Stephens in Cork as St Brendans College’s No 1 team won the event for a third straight staging.
The competition was played over 18 holes as both the Sem’s first side and Colaiste an Chraobhin from Fermoy’s side both tied on 161. The Sem’s total came from a three under par from Fionn McMonagle and one over par for both Fionn O’Callaghan and Lucas Uchytil as their back six scores were better than the Fermoy’s school’s countback meaning they were declared winners with the Sem now having won this competition for the seventh time in its history.
Fionn McMonagle also had the added bonus of winning the best individual score with his three under par round as a second St Brendans team (their third side) managed to make it through to the National Finals as well. This team consisted of Sean Quill, Adam Twomey and Donnacha Slattery as they made it through in sixth place on a score of 179. For the St Brendans 2 side however it was a case of missing out on the National Finals because of countback as their score of 181 was matched by St Colmans Fermoy with the Cork school’s back sixes getting them through in the eighth and final national final spot.
Both Sem teams move forward quickly now to the National Finals which take place over 36 holes on Thursday (October 1st) in Lakeside, Templemore, Co Tipperary. The school are bidding for a fifth straight National title as the County Board wishes them the very best of luck on the day with the Board also wishing to commend both Killarney Community College and Intermediate School Killorglin for entering teams in this year’s Munster event.
