Italy coach Roberto Mancini has spoken out about allegations that he held a “double contract” during his time managing Manchester City, as the English club faces the prospect of losing its landmark case with the Premier League over alleged financial breaches.

However, Mancini, who guided City to their first Premier League title in half a century in 2011-12, also insisted that what is potentially unfolding into the largest scandal in English football history is “not a problem that concerns me.”

Among the wide array of charges facing City is an alleged failure to provide accurate details regarding player and manager payments between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

German magazine Der Spiegel published details in 2018 showing that Mancini doubled his base salary of £1.45 million (now $1.9 million) by advising a club in Abu Dhabi.

Mancini led City to their first trophies following the acquisition by Abu Dhabi’s ruling family in 2008, which included lifting the FA Cup in 2011 and then the Premier League title the following year. He was dismissed by the club just days after a surprising defeat by Wigan in the 2013 FA Cup final.

Mancini was questioned about his City contract during Italy’s news conference in Turkey on Sunday ahead of a Nations League match on Monday.

“It’s not a problem that concerns me,” Mancini said. “Anyhow, it’s not something new, because every four or five years this comes up. Manchester City is not guilty and the fact of having a double contract isn’t my problem but theirs, probably.”

Reports on Friday claimed that an independent panel had upheld almost all of the 100-plus financial charges brought against City in a case initiated more than three years ago.

City did not confirm the outcome, stating their case with the Premier League was “ongoing.”

City have consistently denied wrongdoing, and Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak reiterated that position in a letter to supporters on Saturday.

“The Premier League process still has a long way to run, and our confidence and intent in proving the club’s innocence is just as strong as when this began,” Al Mubarak said.
