Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur in a clash of under pressure teams as the struggling sides collide at Old Trafford in the late Premier League kick off.
Michael Carrick’s team have not won in the league since August and come into the game on the back of a third round exit in the Carabao Cup and a 1-1 draw against Fulham in which Matheus Cunha salvaged a draw late in the day. The Red Devils are 12th in the table and aiming to get their campaign back on track against a struggling Spurs.
Roberto de Zerbi’s team are bottom of the table with no wins and just two draws from their five league games so far. De Zerbi was brought in to save Spurs from relegation last season and after a summer of high spending his team are yet to properly gel. Last time out they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa but goals from Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke in the 86th and 98th minutes showed there is a bit of fight in them.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham
3 mins: Leny Yoro wins the ball on United’s right and pokes it up to Bryan Mbeumo.
Mbeumo spins and runs into space through the middle of the pitch before being brought down by Lucas Bergvall and winning a free kick.
United waste the free kick and play the ball back to Senne Lammens. Lammens tries to give it to Kobbie Mainoo but Bergvall intercepts and finds Dominic Solanke.
Solanke takes the ball into the box and shoots but Lammens makes a save after putting his team in trouble!
Kick off! Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham
Spurs get the ball rolling at Old Trafford. It’s played back to Kinsky who boots it long.
Harry Maguire clears the danger with a headed clearance and Tottenham recover the ball.
Man Utd vs Tottenham
The players make their way out onto the pitch at Old Trafford.
This is a big game for both teams. Whichever one wins will ease the pressure that is building on them, whoever loses will have it ramp up.
How will it go this afternoon?
Kick off is up next…
De Zerbi rests players
One explanation for the seemingly strange Tottenham team is that Roberto de Zerbi has omitted a group of players who played all four games for their countries in the international break and picked several who did not go away, but who he worked with in the meantime.”
Spurs winning recent clashes
Manchester United have won just one of their last nine encounters with Tottenham (three draws, five defeats), though that was the two-goal success at Old Trafford last season.
The Red Devils last won back-to-back games over Spurs between March and October 2022.
Back on target
Tottenham ended a miserable four-game goal drought in the Premier League by scoring two late strikes against Aston Villa in the last match before the international break.
It was not enough to mount a comeback as they fell to a 3-2 home defeat in what was their third league loss of the season.
A slow start
Manchester United are without a win in their last four domestic matches (two draws, two defeats).
That includes a painful 3-2 home defeat to Brighton in the Carabao Cup – one they had led by two goals in the first half – followed by a last-gasp 1-1 draw at Fulham before the international break, courtesy of a deflected 89th-minute equaliser from Matheus Cunha.
A victory today would give them a huge boost in momentum but defeat would increase the pressure on Michael Carrick.

The ticker-style display had been a fixture at Old Trafford since first being hoisted in 2000, with supporters updating it annually.
Carrick expecting ‘best version’ of Spurs
Michael Carrick isn’t deceived by Tottenham’s position in the Premier League table (20th).
He’s expecting a good team to turn up at Old Trafford and make things tricky for the hosts.
“Yeah, points-wise, I think they’ve played a lot better than that, at times,” Carrick admitted.
“When you look at the games, they’re a very good team with some very good players, obviously. Assembled a squad this summer that’s a little bit different to maybe what they’ve had.
“But they’re a good team just because of the points. I understand the question, but we’re not going into it expecting anything less than their best version of what we know what they’re capable of, and actually they have shown for a large part, but probably haven’t had the results that maybe the performances deserve.”
Carrick on Baleba
Carlos Baleba has yet to make his debut for Manchester United but Michael Carrick says he will not rush his introduction into the team.
“He’s certainly getting closer, Carlos,” Carrick said on Friday.
“It’s been great to have him out on the grass and to see him up close really. And [he] played a little bit in a training game that we had last week, so that was good for him to get some minutes. I think the other side of it a little bit, he has missed a lot, and he’s missed crucial time in terms of the end of pre-season.
“There’s a little bit of patience there for him to get up to speed, and that’s up to us to pick that right time for him as well, but he offers us a lot. I’ve said it before, the midfield that we’ve got, we’re really happy with, and the selections and the options that we have, and he definitely adds to that.”
