The NFL is open to an inquiry into the Philadelphia Eagles’ handling of Jalen Hurts’ blood clots after a request from the players’ union, Commissioner Roger Goodell stated Wednesday.
Speaking at a news conference marking the conclusion of the NFL’s annual fall meeting, Goodell stated that Dr. Allen Sills, the league’s chief medical officer, reviewed the procedures that took place, noting that the union was entirely within its rights to request a formal review.
“Obviously, there was a medical evaluation, and I think our protocols were incredibly good there,” Goodell said. “The protocols were followed. Our process is to make sure that’s the case, and our chief medical officer has gone through that, so we’re comfortable that what we’ve seen in the protocols have happened.”
On Tuesday, Sills mounted a firm defense of the Eagles’ medical team. The NFL confirmed that officials communicated with team doctors, trainers, and representatives from the Cleveland Clinic in London.
League executive vice president Jeff Miller indicated that officials possessed a clear understanding of the timeline. Miller denied claims that Hurts had gone without sleep for over 30 hours prior to the October 11 game against Jacksonville, explaining that the quarterback went back to his hotel and slept for approximately seven to eight hours.
Hurts has been placed on injured reserve and is anticipated to miss the remainder of the season after a blood clot originating in his left calf reached his lungs. On Monday, the Eagles alongside agent Nicole Lynn confirmed that Hurts is being treated for deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary embolisms. His recovery plan requires blood thinners, prohibiting him from engaging in any football activities while on the medication.
Goodell minimized suggestions that international travel might have played a role in the situation.
“The most important thing here is Jalen’s health, ultimately, and the future of him,” Goodell said. “He’s a wonderful young man: not just a great player, but he’s someone we all care deeply about. I’m more worried about his health, ultimately, but the protocols were followed.”
Sills noted on Tuesday that clearance for air travel with a blood clot condition relies on multiple factors, such as the specific location of the clot and patient history.
“What I can tell you is expert people getting a lot of opinions,” Sills said. “This isn’t just one doctor saying yay or nay. You’re going to poll a panel of experts both within the team and outside the team to get the best judgment and experience with a particular condition.”
