England legend Lawrence Dallaglio is putting his Rugby World Cup winner’s medal up for sale amid his bankruptcy and ongoing financial troubles.

Dallaglio was a key part of the England squad that won the 2003 World Cup – dramatically beating Australia 20-17 in the final thanks to Jonny Wilkinson’s drop goal in extra time – and has worked as a pundit since his retirement from playing in 2008.

However, the 54-year-old was declared bankrupt last year after racking up hundreds of thousands of pounds of debt to HM Revenue and Customs and others.

Now, he is putting his medal up for auction at Budds in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, with an estimate of £50,000 to £80,000.

Dallaglio, who won 85 caps for England between 1995 and 2007 while also going on three British and Irish Lions tours, was also part of England’s 2007 World Cup that lost in the final to South Africa – with that runners-up medal being put up for auction as well, with an estimated value of £10,000.

His 2003 Six Nations winner’s medal (£5,000), British and Irish Lions cap (£5,500), England cap (£8,000) and individual awards for two European Cups and three league titles with Wasps (£8,000 each) are also all part of the collection, which could raise as much as £180,000 in total.

Auctioneer Budds said of the World Cup winner’s medal: “It was presented to Dallaglio on November 22, 2003 in Sydney, following victory in the Rugby World Cup final against host nation Australia.

“England defeated Australia 20-17 after extra time. It was the pinnacle of world rugby and the singular greatest achievement in English rugby history.”

In his first major interview since being declared bankrupt last May, which came after his divorce from estranged wife Alice, Dallaglio spoke toThe High Performance podcast and admitted he “could have done things a lot better”.

Dallaglio said: “As a result of getting divorced, I was made bankrupt. I had some financial problems.

“And I probably was guilty of withdrawing back into my little shell and going a little bit into hibernation because, naturally, I’m quite a sort of extrovert, confident, bubbly individual – annoyingly confident sometimes.

“What I didn’t expect was so much of a period of such self-pity. I’ve been a little bit guilty of being a bit sort of, ‘Isn’t life really unkind?’ and ‘Haven’t things worked out against me? Is it all me or is it just bad timing?’”

Reflecting on what he could have done differently, Dallaglio added: “Much of it was my own doing. That’s the first thing you have to acknowledge. I could have done things a lot better.

“Might not have got divorced. I could have been one of those people that just parks all the real feelings and just carries on and lives a lie. I don’t know. Maybe I could have carried on doing that.”
