DC Public Library announces ‘Hail to the Fans: The Spirit of DC Sports’ and invites the region to lend its stories, memories, and memorabilia to a citywide exhibition opening April 2027.
WASHINGTON, DC — DC Public Library announced “Hail to the Fans: The Spirit of DC Sports,” a citywide exhibition opening April 2027, and launched a public call for residents to contribute the memorabilia, photographs, and personal memories that will form its foundation.
The exhibition documents Washington’s sports culture as a community experience one built across generations through the rituals, loyalties, and shared moments that connected neighbors, families, and entire communities to the District’s professional sports teams and to each other. The Library is inviting anyone whose life has been touched by DC sports to contribute, whether through a prized object, a family photograph, or a memory.
“’Hail to the Fans’ is Washington sports history told by the people who made it. Washington is entering one of the most consequential sports moments in a generation, and DC Public Library’s responsibility is to make sure fan culture is part of that record. The most enduring archives are built from what communities choose to preserve — and this community has been holding onto remarkable things. D.C. Wants Your Story is our invitation to Washington to share them with us.”
Residents who contribute items loan them for the duration of the exhibition and retain full ownership. Every item is returned when the exhibition closes in October 2027. Each contributor’s name will appear on the wall beside their object or story, becoming a permanent part of the public record of Washington sports.

At announcement event at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, Darren Rovell, a nationally recognized sports memorabilia authority and former ESPN correspondent, presented objects from Washington-area residents whose stories the exhibition will feature. Among them: a Nationals Park staff member who earned a World Series ring through decades of employment at the ballpark; a young Capitals fan whose story Rovell covered during his time at ESPN; and one of the Washington Spirit’s most prominent supporters, known throughout the supporter community for his pink cowboy hat.
“Every artifact tells a story, and every fan has one worth preserving,” said Darren Rovell. “We’re proud to partner with the DC Public Library to ensure that Washington’s sports history isn’t told only by the players and broadcasters, but through the memories, traditions, and keepsakes of the fans who lived it.”
Also in attendance was Hailey Baptiste, the Washington-born professional tennis player who grew up in the city’s parks and recreation tennis programs and went on to compete at the highest levels of the sport. Baptiste, who is recovering from a knee injury, represents exactly the story the exhibition is built to tell: a DC kid whose love for sports was shaped by this city long before anyone was watching.
“I was a DC fan before I was a DC athlete,” said Hailey Baptiset. “A program at Rock Creek Park believed in me before anyone was watching, and this city’s sports gave me something to reach for. That’s what this exhibition is. It’s for everyone who showed up. The kids in the parks programs, the families in the stands, the people who let a little girl through the back door because they saw something. That’s the story of DC sports, and it deserves to be kept.”
The exhibition opens during an important year in Washington sports history. In April, coinciding with the opening of the exhibit, the District will host the NFL Draft, and in the fall, Capital One Arena will complete a three-year transformation bringing a state-of-the-art arena to downtown Washington.
“Hail to the Fans” is a partnership of DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, and Monumental Sports & Entertainment. The Washington Commanders, Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics, Washington Capitals, Washington Spirit, DC United, Events DC, CLLCT, and the National Children’s Museum are participating partners.
The exhibition runs April through October 2027 at the MLK Memorial Library and all 25 neighborhood locations. Residents can submit items and stories at dclibrary.org/hail-fans.
