Louis Oosthuizen is set to become the latest high-profile departure from LIV Golf, with the former British Open winner stating it is time to exit the breakaway league during a period of deep uncertainty for its future.

The South African joins former world number one Jon Rahm among those walking away from the circuit, which is currently seeking to navigate Chapter 11 bankruptcy following the decision by Saudi Arabia‘s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to cut its funding in April.

Having secured fresh investment via BC Partners Credit, LIV will make a decision this month on whether to cease operations entirely or move forward with a revised 2.0 model. Oosthuizen, who competed in LIV’s inaugural event in June 2022 as one of its earliest signings, told the South China Morning Post that a proposed scaled-back schedule would require excessive global travel for single tournaments.

“I need to arrange my own schedule and look after my body,” said the 44-year-old ahead of this week’s Hong Kong Open. “I want to play near one spot for three weeks at a time, not have all the big travelling for one tournament.

“I loved LIV and the team aspect, but it’s time to move on,” added the 2010 British Open champion. Oosthuizen is still listed as captain of the Southern Guards GC team on the LIV website, and confirmation regarding his departure has been sought from the league.

According to reports in U.S. media, players have a soft deadline of October 25 to make an official decision on whether they will remain with the circuit.

The prospect of LIV players returning to golf’s established tours has divided opinion, with Rory McIlroy shockingly, after being an outspoken critic, backing their return while insisting that the views of those who remained loyal to the PGA Tour must also be considered.

McIlroy, speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in India last week, said he would vote in favour of allowing former LIV players back into the PGA Tour, arguing their presence could benefit the sport commercially.

“I think a rising tide lifts all boats, and I think having some of these players back is beneficial for the business of the tours, absolutely,” the Northern Irishman said.

However, McIlroy acknowledged that players who rejected lucrative LIV offers to remain on the PGA Tour could feel unfairly treated if their former rivals were allowed to return without consequences.
