Rathmore through in County Championship; joined by Stacks, Crokes and East Kerry

Rathmore are the first side into the ¼ finals of the Garvey’s Supervalu County Senior Football Championship.

At Fitzgerald Stadium they won against St Kieran’s 2-14 to 0-19 in dramatic circumstances.

A Killian Dennehy 2 pointer for Kierans opened the scoring. Scores from Alan Dineen and Andrew Moynihan had Rathmore level by the 5th minute. An Alan Dineen 2 pointer in the 8th minute put Rathmore in front at 4 points to 2. After Rathmore went 3 clear an Adam O’Donoghue 2 pointer brought Kierans within one of them after quarter of an hour; 5 points to 4. Kierans equalised but weren’t on terms for long as a Mark Ryan goal had Rathmore 3 to the good in the 17th minute. 4 minutes later they were ahead by double scores at 1-7 to 0-5. A Darragh Nagle goal gave Rathmore further breathing space at half-time; 2-7 to 0-5.

Kierans had 4 points in a row to halve the deficit to 2-7 to 0-9 after 38 minutes. An Adam Barry two pointer then halved that 4 point deficit by the 40 minute mark. Mark Ryan’s point gave Rathmore a 3 point advantage. An Adam O’Donoghue 2 pointer made it a 1 point game at 2-8 to 0-13. Kierans drew level with 14 minutes to go. Points by Adam Dineen and Ciaran Collins had Rathmore ahead with 10 minutes to go; 2-10 to 0-14. Sean O’Connell’s 2 pointer had Kierans level. With 6 minutes to go Cathal McElligott put Kierans ahead at 0-18 to 2-11. Rathnmore equalised through Paul Murphy. Killian Dennehy restored the 1 point lead for Kierans inside the final two minutes. Ciaran Collins found a Rathmore equaliser. Mark Reen was the Rathmore hero, scoring the winning point with 5 seconds left in the encounter.

Also in Fitzgerald Stadium Austin Stacks overcame Milltown/Castlemaine 5-17 to 1-10.

Milltown Castlemaine had the opening score, but quickly found themselves trailing by 2 points to 1. Ben Murphy doubled that Stacks advantage, Paddy Lane then extending the lead after 5 minutes; 4 points to 1. Milltown Castlemaine cut that gap to 1. It was 7 to 4 after 19 minutes, then moved onto 9 to 5. A Paddy Lane goal helped Stacks into a half time lead of 1-12 to 0-5. Lane also accounted for 6 of those Stacks points.

Stacks were ahead 1-14 to 1-5 entering the 42nd minute when a Jack Murphy goal extended their advantage. Joe O’Connor netted 3 minutes later and Stacks went on to open up a 3-16 to 1-8 lead. Stacks got a 4th goal through Cian Purcell and the same player netted again before the final whistle. Stacks won 5-17 to 1-10.

Dr.Crokes beat South Kerry 1-20 to 0-12 in Killorglin.

South Kerry opened the scoring with a first minute point. Crokes had the next two scores – from Michael Burns and Brian Loonedy – to nudge one in front after 4 minutes. Another Looney score put them 2 clear. Tony Brosnan’s 2 pointer had Crokes 4 clear after 10 minutes. South Kerry hit back, and trailed by a solitary point at the quarter hour stage; 0-6 to 0-5. South Kerry equalised after 20 minutes; 6 points apiece. South Kerry made it 10 all in the final minute of the period. A Gavin White point had Crokes in front by 1 at the break; 11 to 10.

After South Kerry equalised, Crokes went back in front by 1. Five minutes into the period a Cian McMahon 2 pointer had Crokes 3 clear at 14 points to 11. Crokes led 17-12 by the 3/4 stage, then tagged on 2 further points to go 7 up entering the closing 10 minutes. In added on time Tony Brosnan goaled for Crokes and they won by 1-20 to 0-12.

In Austin Stack Park East Kerry won against Mid Kerry by 1-12 to 1-11 in yet another dramatic conclusion.

Mid Kerry led 4 points to 1 after 11 minutes. A David Clifford goal meant East Kerry trailed by just 1 at 0-5 to 1-1. Mid Kerry led 1-5 to 1-3 after 25 minutes. It was 1-5 each at the break.

East Kerry had the better of the early exchanges of the second half, opening up a 1-8 to 1-6 lead. Mid Kerry cut that in half but were racking up the wides-they had 9 by the 45 minute mark. David Clifford then doubled that East Kerry advantage. Back to back points had Mid Kerry level. A Stephen Gannon fisted effort gave Mid Kerry the lead in the closing minute. A David Clifford 2 point attempt for East Kerry then went wide but a breach afforded East Kerry the opportunity for a 2 pointer to win the match. Up stepped David Clifford and this time he did the necessary.
