Scotland’s search for a first win over New Zealand continues as the All Blacks surged away in the second half at Murrayfield in an emphatic 43-21 win.
The hosts had arrived with confidence that they could challenge again having pushed New Zealand close 12 months ago, but Gregor Townsend’s side found themselves blown away after the interval having been in touch at half time. Hooker Ewan Ashman registered a first-half hat-trick to stay with a fast-starting New Zealand, but Scotland could not stay the course, failing to register even a point after the resumption to come away without even a bonus point.
It was another impressive showing from the All Blacks, who have been reinvented under Dave Rennie. The tourists adjusted well having struggled with their discipline and lost two players to yellow cards in the first half, and were much too strong in the second to remain unbeaten in the Nations Championship.
Follow all of the latest from the Nations Championship clash with our live blog below:
Gregor Townsend speaks to ITV
“Disappointing. I was disappointed in the first half with how our discipline allowed New Zealand into our 22. Some of our attacking play was excellent in that first half, but we just couldn’t get the ball in that third quarter. I felt we had enough play in the first half to build on, but we couldn’t do that in the second.
“If you can hold onto ball in the modern game, then you can get points. We did that in the first half; in the second, we didn’t do that well enough.”
And here’s Sione Tuipulotu
“It’s disappointing, to be honest. We probably left points out there in the first half, and we were nowhere near accurate enough in the second half. We couldn’t stick with them. I don’t think our discipline was good enough, and I think that probably starts with me.
“We were playing our rugby, we were putting them under pressure with ball in hand. We just weren’t accurate enough when we got down into the 22. I think that pretty much proves that we weren’t up to the level that the All Blacks were in the second half. It’s a must-win game next week. We’ll regroup, stick together as we have always done, and look to go again next week.”
Quinn Tupaea is the player of the match
“A very satisfying win,” he tells ITV. “It was a tough week for the group but we rallied together well, and got a good result here at a difficult place to play.
“We had a tough tour in Africa, came back and played some impressive rugby against Australia and that flowed on tonight. We love playing this style of rugby, keeping the ball on the park. Our defence could be tidied up.
“It’s very tight. Every point counts. Wales are a classy side so it is going to be a tough match at the Principality. It’s a game we are looking forward to.”
FT: Scotland 21-43 New Zealand
Emphatic, in the end, for New Zealand, keeping Scotland scoreless in the second half to surge away. Some clever, and crucial, half-time adjustments from Dave Rennie and his staff, and the All Blacks still just have that extra depth that a team like the hosts lack.
For Scotland…disappointing, really. Not even a bonus point, which may harm them in the final Nations Championship equation.
Scotland 21-43 New Zealand, 80 minutes
Rory Darge has been outstanding in a losing effort for Scotland, and is still trucking, making three carries in quick succession as his side threaten to breach the All Blacks for the first time in this half. Into the 22 they travel, after a bit of toil…until they are turned over.
Beauden Barrett has the last word, booting the ball into touch.
Scotland 21-43 New Zealand, 78 minutes
A free kick at the lineout, but Scotland knock on soon after. All Blacks possession, with their own thoughts of finishing with a try.
They aren’t going to chance anything, though. A grubber is dribbled down the right touchline and, eventually, over it. Scotland back deep in their own territory and needing to go coast-to-coast.
Scotland 21-43 New Zealand, 77 minutes
A high tackle allows them the freedom of an advantage to play with…but not for long. Asafo Aumua the man picked up, and back Scotland will come for that infringement.
Scotland 21-43 New Zealand, 75 minutes
Smart game management from New Zealand, continuing to let the air out of the balloon with a series of conservative phases followed by a pinpoint Damian McKenzie kick. Blair Kinghorn watches it trundle into touch.
Scotland’s lineout inside their own 22. Can they come away with a try bonus point at least?
Scotland 21-43 New Zealand, 73 minutes
Referee Andrew Brace corrects his error, awarding New Zealand a scrum having ruled live that there had been a forward pass. It went back off Scottish hands. Fair enough to the official.
A good platform, this, near the Scottish 10-metre…although a free kick to the All Blacks prevents them setting an attack. They tap and play.
