A single goal from teenager Justin Ellis earned the United States a 1-0 victory against Canada on Tuesday, capping a successful international window.

The win marked a fourth consecutive friendly victory for the US, who utilized the fixture block to evaluate several young prospects with a view toward the program’s long-term future. The US starting lineup on Tuesday averaged just 21 caps, with an average age of 23 years and 156 days.

“They seemed pretty comfortable from the beginning because they all knew each other,” USMNT defender Chris Richards said of the 13 players who earned their first international caps over the past four matches. “It’s been a lot of fun getting to know everyone, and not just on the field.”

Ellis, a 19-year-old forward playing professionally for Orlando of Major League Soccer, put the US ahead in the 29th minute. A give-and-go between Alex Freeman and Malik Tillman created space down the right flank before Freeman sent in a cross that Ellis converted, scoring his second goal in three national team appearances.

Just 10 minutes prior, Ellis — who scored the opening goal in a victory over Peru on September 26 — was left on the ground following a heavy foul. He received medical treatment on the sideline but was still limping when he returned to the pitch shortly before scoring.

Canada entered the match seeking to build momentum after appearing in back-to-back World Cups for the first time in their history. Earlier in this window, the Canadians defeated Chile 2-1 in Toronto and shut out Peru 2-0 in Montreal.

During the last 10 days, the US beat Chile, Peru and Mexico by an aggregate total of 11-3.

“The effort was massive,” US coach Mauricio Pochettino said. “We played four games in two weeks, and to play with the same intensity, the same commitment, the same passion is not easy.

“I’m not happy because we won. I’m happy because of the performance and the commitment that the players showed.”

Pochettino made six changes from the starting lineup used in Friday’s 3-0 win against Mexico in Glendale, Arizona. Seventeen-year-old phenom Cavan Sullivan, who became the youngest player to score for the US in that fixture, did not feature against Canada.

Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake earned the clean sheet, making three saves during his first start and second appearance for the national team.

Schwake’s most critical moment arrived in the 63rd minute when he tipped a close-range effort from Luc de Fougerolles onto the crossbar.

The US now holds a record of 18 wins, 12 losses and 13 draws across all competitions against Canada.

Up next, both teams return to action in November for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals. The US will take on Haiti while Canada faces off against Guatemala.
