Toronto goldfish Swimbappe making a splash with surprisingly accurate World Cup predictions

A tiny oranda goldfish named Swimbappe has become an unlikely sensation in Toronto, captivating soccer fans with his daily World Cup match predictions from an elaborate underwater pitch.

The aquatic oracle, named after France captain Kylian Mbappe, resides in a custom-designed tank resembling a soccer field, prominently displayed outside an office building in downtown Toronto.

Each day, the vibrant orange fish positions himself in the center of his miniature pitch to deliver his verdict on upcoming matches. With the competing teams’ flags positioned above the tank, a small crowd typically gathers, counting down as Swimbappe swims either left or right to indicate his chosen winner.

His predictive prowess has been notable, boasting 14 correct predictions against just four errors, alongside 10 draws. Tim Glenn, creative director at OneMethod and one of the minds behind Swimbappe, acknowledged the challenge of interpreting certain outcomes.

“The draws are a little bit difficult for him to communicate to us with his fish body,” Glenn explained.

Swimbappe follows in the fin-steps of celebrated animal seers, such as Paul the Octopus, who gained global fame during the 2010 World Cup for accurately predicting Germany’s game results.

Other animals, including orangutans and elephants, have also tried their hand at sports prognostication. Glenn, a soccer enthusiast, conceived the idea this summer to engage the public during the World Cup, sifting through nearly 100 potential names before settling on Swimbappe.

“This is kind of our way of participating in this big cultural moment that’s happening for our city here in Toronto and also for our country here in Canada,” he stated.

The tournament has seen various animals make their mark.

In Mexico City, Merlin the Duck became an unexpected sensation waddling through streets in a miniature Mexico jersey, while Dawn the Duck joined Scotland’s Tartan Army in Providence, Rhode Island.

Swimbappe, too, has been drawing a steady stream of onlookers. “Everyone’s excited to see him in the window on their way to work or on their way to a game,” Glenn remarked, delighted by the reception.

Recently, a group of schoolchildren chanted “Swimbappe! Swimbappe!” as they passed, moments after others watched him predict a victory for Haiti, the significant underdog, in their Group C match against Brazil.

“There’s a method to his madness,” Glenn concluded. “We just have to trust his process and believe in Swimbappe.”
