Killarney’s James Weldon is set to leave his role as Ireland women’s basketball head coach.
Basketball Ireland are closing in on the appointment of a new head coach, meaning Weldon will not remain in the position after seven seasons in charge.
The Killarney man has been credited with improving Ireland’s competitiveness during his time in the role.
When he took over in 2019, Ireland had been out of full European competition for over a decade.
Under Weldon, Ireland won silver at the European Small Countries Championships in 2021, before returning to EuroBasket qualification.
Ireland also recorded home and away wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina in their most recent campaign, but were denied progression following an overtime defeat to Israel.
Weldon had reapplied for the role and was interviewed, but Basketball Ireland are now expected to appoint an overseas coach in the coming days.
