World Cup winners to be presented with Super Bowl-style rings

Fifa will award Super Bowl-style rings to the winners of the World Cup final contested between Argentina and Spain, which will be attended by Donald Trump.

Marketed as strictly limited edition, 30 rings will be made available to the winning team on Sunday, while a further 1,996 rings will go on sale to fans.

Each ring will include a mini World Cup trophy in its design and an engraving in the band, with it being customised to reflect the culture of the victorious country.

The winners’ captain and head coach will receive temporary rings immediately after the final to commemorate the occasion before the 30 rings and custom-fitted and delivered at a later date.

Winner rings are a tradition in American sport, with the victors of the NBA Finals also famed for getting the bejewelled accessory as a prize.

President Trump will be at the heart of the prize-giving, with it confirmed he will hand over the World Cup trophy to the champions as he attends only his first match of the tournament.

Trump was not present for a single USA match during their home World Cup run to the quarter-finals, which ended at the hands of Belgium.

However, he was embroiled in the biggest controversy of the tournament after calling up Fifa president Gianni Infantino, with whom he has a very publicly close relationship, to lobby for a review of star striker Folarin Balogun’s red card.

What resulted was the extraordinary decision to suspend the ban despite Fifa, citing a little-known clause in its regulations, making Balogun available for the clash against Belgium.

Trump openly admitted to calling Infantino, confirming that the World Cup had become subject to political interference as criticism rained down on Fifa amid questions of sporting integrity.

The US president will be present at MetLife Stadium for the finale showpiece, which will also see the USA national anthem play before kick-off – another American sporting tradition, albeit a bizarre one to keep for this occasion given that the US are not playing.
