Casey Jarvis built on a fast start to make a fine seven-under par over the Old Course at St Andrews and take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The South African, who held a one-shot advantage overnight, had set off on the par-four 10th and opened with a superb eagle on his approach from 103 yards before also picking up three more birdies ahead of the turn despite the windy conditions.

Two more on the back nine, at three and five, saw him sign for a 65, to sit at 18 under, ahead of Englishman Matthew Jordan and Poland’s Adrian Meronk, who shot the joint-best round of the day with a nine-under 63 at Kingsbarns.

“I just felt like I was in control of my game today. I was really solid tee-to-green, and luckily rolled in a couple putts,” said Jarvis, who is aiming to close out a third DP World Tour win this season.

“Every golfer dreams of taking a lead, playing the Old Course on Sunday. I got goosebumps right now just standing here.

“I just can’t wait for tomorrow. Even if I don’t win, to be taking the lead, I am just going to enjoy it as much as I can.”

Jarvis added in quotes on the DP Tour website: “Obviously I know I am going to be feeling pressure tomorrow. I have won twice this year, so I kind of know how to deal with it a little better.

“I still know I am going to feel first tee nerves and pressure throughout the day, but I am just going to try and manage it as much as I can.”

Jordan, meanwhile, is looking for his first DP World Tour win in his 183rd tournament.

The Royal Liverpool member, who claimed the 2017 St Andrews Links Trophy victory as an amateur, carded a bogey-free 66 during his third round at Kingsbarns.

“I want to be in the last few groups and I want to give myself a really good chance on Sunday,” said Jordan, who had opened the tournament with a 69 at St Andrews and an impressive seven-under 65 at Carnoustie. “That’s what I have done today, so let’s see what tomorrow brings.”

Belgian Thomas Detry is at 15-under after his seven-under at St Andrews, while Denmark’s Jacob Skov Olesen made a nine-under 63 at Kingsbarns and is four shots off the lead alongside compatriot Niklas Norgaard, who played the Old Course in 67.

Jose Luis Ballester holed a 130-foot putt on the par-five fifth at St Andrews on his way to a four-under round which leaves him in a three-way tie for eighth at 12-under, alongside Scotland’s Calum Hill – whose 65 round at Kingsbarns included two bogeys and a double bogey as well as an eagle.

Matt Fitzpatrick made six under on the Old Course to also sit at 12 under, as is defending champion Bob MacIntyre who went round St Andrews in 68, recovering from a double-bogey at the second.
