England secured a needed victory in the Nations League as they defeated Czech Republic 2-0 in Prague to earn their first points of the group stage.
Following a 3-2 loss to Spain at the weekend, Thomas Tuchel’s side needed to excel against the Czechs and, after a shaky start, were handed the advantage when Elliot Anderson was fouled by Pavel Sulc. Such was the manner of the challenge that Sulc was shown a red card and the hosts were reduced to 10-men.
Yet, England still struggled to impose themselves on the game and needed the half-time break to reset before Anthony Gordon met a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross and headed the Three Lions in front.
Harry Kane eased any concerns of a comeback by scoring the second goal from close range and Tuchel’s substitutes, which included Jude Bellingham, Alex Scott and Rio Ngumoha, closed out the game and made sure England brought home the points.

Goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane helped Thomas Tuchel’s side to victory over their 10-man hosts – with their right-back laying on a trademark assist.

Tuchel added: “Not a lot can convert it. It was an awful lot to do for him. Good pass and good goal.
“Both good. The position in the second half suited Trent [Alexander-Arnold] more than in the first half. Lewis [Hall] did excellent on the other side. Well done.
“Credit to all of them because they deserved and now it is important that we relax and enjoy the evening, do a good recovery and the prepare for Croatia.”

The England manager said: “We played very professional, second half we stepped up. Kept the intensity going, very professional and the effort was still there.

“Strange to get an early red card, not the best for the team and spectators. It’s an awkward one but we kept going, got a win and that’s what counts.”

Anthony Gordon was full of praise for Trent Alexander-Arnold who returned to the England team tonight.
He said: “I make that run time and time again and only a certain number of players have that ability, technique and bravery to be willing to make the mistake trying that pass. That’s why he’s so good and I’ve been dying to play with him for that reason.
“He’s had his own journey with England. He would’ve liked to have played more than he has but he’s been a great character during this camp, I’ve really enjoyed being around him.”

England’s first goalscorer said: “I think it was good, quite dominant. We should’ve had more goals in the end, probably enough quality around the final third.
“A couple of things to work on – we need to be dominant, go for the throat and really put games away.”

The England midfielder made his debut for the national team tonight.
He said: “I’ve learned a lot, my last camp I probably wasn’t ready to play. I learned a lot in the summer and I’m definitely ready now. Thanks to all the staff, I’m really grateful.
“So special. I grew up watching some of the boys play and now to be a part of the squad and the team – it’s a massive honour.
“I think I did OK, I really enjoyed it. It was a great game for me.”
“Yeah big win today, I think the Spain game the lads did really well, just unfortunately didn’t get the win. We’ve got Saturday and Tuesday to go and hopefully two wins.”
England move up
England’s victory over Czech Republic moves them up to second in Group A3.
They jump above Croatia who lost to Spain tonight.
England’s goal difference is better but they face Croatia in a crucial clash on Saturday.
