Daniil Medvedev has been defaulted from his China Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic after hitting a fan in the crowd with the ball.
The Russian player was down 7-5, 5-3 with Djokovic serving for the match at 15-15, when world No 5 Medvedev failed to reach a Djokovic winner.
The ball then rebounded off the backboard and Medvedev hit the ball into the face of a fan sitting in the front row, who clutched his eye in pain and was taken away from the court.
Chair umpire Mohammed Lahyani, after discussion with an ATP official, then defaulted 30-year-old Medvedev, in scenes not dissimilar to Novak Djokovic’s disqualification from the 2020 US Open – when the Serb hit a line umpire with the ball.
“It’s a bit of a shock to be honest, I hope that person is not badly injured,” 24-time major winner Djokovic said.
“I also feel sorry for Daniil. I know exactly how he feels to be disqualified in a big match. I am sure that Daniil did not want to do this intentionally.”
It is not Medvedev’s first disciplinary mishap in recent times. Last year, he was fined £31,500 after a meltdown at the US Open when a photographer walked onto the court, while in April 2026 he was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct after smashing his racket in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Matteo Berrettini in Monte-Carlo.
Yet this default handed Djokovic a place in the final in Bejing, where he will face Australian No 1 Alex de Minaur on Tuesday.
“Terribly sorry to the spectator, first of all. I’m trying to get in touch with him, if he wants it,” Medvedev, 30, said.
“Hopefully I can apologise in person and see how he feels. I mean, 100 per cent (an) accident. You can see that I didn’t hit the ball in anger. Actually I do a lot of bad things, but usually ball abuse is not my thing.
“The ball was bouncing back, so I tried to, like, just hit it anywhere, so it doesn’t go out from the court. When I saw the result, I mean, I felt horrible because, again, I don’t think I was ever close to such (a) situation. The most important (thing is), I hope that he’s OK because you never know with these types of situations.”
In the women’s draw, Sonay Kartal’s WTA Tour comeback at the China Open has ended after she lost in straight sets to Alina Charaeva in the third round.
The Masters event represented Kartal’s first WTA tournament since March after a six-month absence with a stress fracture in the back.
Kartal, who made the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, showed good form in China to beat Andrea Lazaro Garcia and Wang Xinyu, but exited in the last 32 following a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Charaeva, who stunned world number one Elena Rybakina in round two.
British No 5 Kartal played her part in a competitive 91-minute battle on Moon Court and broke Charaeva in the first set, but struggled on her own serve to lose the opener.
Further opportunities were presented in the second and yet with Kartal unable to convert any of her five break points, Charaeva cruised into the fourth round.
Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz earlier rallied from a set down to get the better of Jaume Munar and reach a second consecutive Japan Open final.
Defending champion Alcaraz was only on court for 83 minutes of Sunday’s quarter-final after Denis Shapovalov retired, but compatriot Munar pushed the world number three all the way a day later.
Munar won four games in a row to claim the first set against the top seed in Tokyo, but Alcaraz regrouped after an exchange of breaks at the start of the second and outlasted his opponent to clinch a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Alcaraz will face Jiri Lehecka, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over eighth seed Valentin Vacherot.
