Hearts face daunting Champions League qualifying draw amid transfer and manager turmoil

Heart of Midlothian faces a formidable challenge in their pursuit of the lucrative Champions League group stage, with their journey set to begin in Austria next month.

Following a devastating final match defeat in the Scottish Premiership, which saw them surrender the title to Celtic, Hearts have been drawn against Sturm Graz in the second qualifying round.

The Edinburgh club must navigate three demanding rounds to reach the 36-team league phase, which commences in September.

The first-leg matches are scheduled for 21 and 22 July, just two days after the World Cup final, with the return fixtures taking place a week later.

In contrast, Scottish champions Celtic will enter the competition at the qualifying play-offs stage in late August, enjoying a more direct route.

Hearts’ difficult European assignment comes amidst a period of significant upheaval. Star forward Lawrence Shankland, currently on World Cup duty with Scotland, has departed for Glasgow giants Rangers.

Adding to their woes, the Ibrox club is also reportedly set to poach coach Derek McInnes from Hearts, a mere five weeks before their crucial Champions League qualifying campaign begins.

Should Hearts progress past Sturm Graz, they could face formidable opponents in the third qualifying round, including Bodo/Glimt, Lyon, or Union Saint-Gilloise.

Elsewhere in the draw for teams that finished runners-up in mid-ranked leagues, Fenerbahce will take on Gornik Zabrze.

Meanwhile, a separate draw for domestic title holders saw two first-time national champions receive contrasting fortunes. Swiss champions Thun face a tough test at home against Champions League regulars Dinamo Zagreb.

Sweden’s Mjällby, also playing at home first, will meet either Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar or Inter Club d’Escaldes of Andorra, who contest their first qualifying round ties in early July.

Both Thun and Mjällby were unseeded, ensuring they would face a higher-ranked opponent. Red Star Belgrade, the 1991 European Cup winners, were drawn to play away first against Tre Fiori of San Marino or Northern Ireland’s Larne.
