Thursday’s sport: What’s on and where can I watch?

England resume their second Test showdown with New Zealand at The Oval without skipper Ben Stokes.

World Cup co-hosts Canada are in action on Thursday as the second round of group fixtures gets under way.

Elsewhere, the HSBC Championships continue at Queen’s Club, as does Royal Ascot, where it is Gold Cup day.

Root takes centre-stage

England will embark upon day two of the second Test against New Zealand with former skipper Joe Root back at the helm after Ben Stokes was made unavailable.

Coverage from The Oval starts on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket at 10.15am.

At the Women’s T20 World Cup, Scotland will hope to extend their winning start to the tournament when they face the West Indies at Headingley in Group Two, with the action getting under way on Sky Sports Cricket at 7pm.

Czech it out

At the football World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Africa will attempt to open their respective Group A accounts belatedly when they kick off at 5pm in Atlanta on BBC One. The South Africans went down 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico in their opening fixture, while the Czechs lost 2-1 to South Korea.

In Group B, where all four sides are locked together on one point, Switzerland tackle Bosnia and Herzegovina on ITV from 7pm, while co-hosts Canada entertain 2022 hosts Qatar on the same channel from 10.30pm.

Mexico and South Korea will fight it out for top spot in Group A on BBC Two from 1.50am on Friday.

Scandinavia going for gold

St Leger winner Scandinavia will target Gold Cup success at Royal Ascot on Thursday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained horse is a hot favourite to land another Group 1 crown in the 4.15pm race, the big one in a seven-race card on ITV regions from 1.30pm and ITV4 from 5.50pm.

The HSBC Championships continue at Queen’s Club as the build-up to Wimbledon gathers pace, with BBC Two providing the coverage from 1pm.

Sky Sports Action is the place to go for the showdown between the Betfred Super League’s top two, Warrington and Leeds, at 7.30pm.

Further afield, Masters champion Rory McIlroy will launch his bid for US Open glory at Shinnecock Hills on Sky Sports Golf at 12.30pm and Sky Sports Main Event at 6.30pm.

1963: Henry Cooper rocked the boxing world by putting Cassius Clay, who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali, on the canvas – but the super-confident fighter hit back to win, with Cooper bleeding heavily from a cut over an eye.

2009: Yeats, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, made history by becoming the first horse to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot for a fourth time.

2016: England made history as they completed a first-ever series victory in Australia. Eddie Jones‘ side claimed a 23-7 win in Melbourne to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. They went on to win the third Test as well.
