Amy Hunt secured gold in the 100 metres on the opening day of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The 24-year-old, a world 200m silver medallist, finished ahead of defending champion and compatriot Dina Asher-Smith, who placed fifth in Monday night’s final.

This followed Great Britain claiming their first medal of the competition with silver in the mixed 4x400m relay.

Hunt completed the race in exactly 11 seconds, finishing two hundredths of a second clear of Poland’s Ewa Swoboda, while Delphine Nkansa of Belgium took bronze.

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen also triumphed in the men’s 5000m, winning his first event since undergoing Achilles surgery after last year’s world championships in Tokyo.
