Thomas Tuchel has defended England’s handling of Alex Scott, describing the midfielder’s thigh injury as a “strange one” and maintaining that there was “zero risk-taking” prior to a problem that may sideline the Bournemouth player for up to two months.

The 23-year-old had been patient for his senior international opportunity, having missed out during his initial call-up last November before taking part in the pre-World Cup training camp in Florida.

After coming on as a substitute during last week’s 2-0 Nations League victory in Czechia, Scott impressed on his full debut in Saturday’s 7-0 victory away to Croatia.

Tuchel had intended to include the midfielder in his starting lineup for Tuesday’s home fixture against Czechia to conclude the camp, but minor pre-match discomfort unexpectedly developed into an unforeseen lay-off of up to two months.

“It’s a bit of strange one,” the England boss said. “I’m very sad about it. Alex trained both training sessions before the match full against Croatia. He did extra work after the training sessions.

Tuchel insists England took ‘zero risk’ with Scott’s fitness (PA Wire)

“We knew that he was in treatment, but there were only green lights from himself, from the medics.

“When we asked him, when we were aware that there is a slight discomfort throughout the match. We asked him if he wanted to come off, he said, ‘No’.

“After the match, he said like, ‘Yeah, OK, it was the right thing to do, but I could have played 90 minutes, I don’t feel an injury’.

“Even on the day after before we did the scan, he felt that he’s not injured, so it’s a strange one because it does not match the objectivity of the scan and the prediction of the time that he is obviously going to miss.

“It doesn’t match his feelings and doesn’t match at all the process into the match and during the match.

“There was zero risk-taking from our side. There was no awareness that there is any risk something could happen like this. It’s a kind of a one-off, strange one.”

Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa also departed the camp on Monday following a blow in Croatia that aggravated an issue present when he linked up with the squad, though Tuchel expects he has suffered “nothing major”.

Scott’s prognosis is far more concerning, with the player set to miss crucial fixtures for Bournemouth across both domestic and European competitions, in addition to November’s international fixtures.

“I can 100 per cent understand that Bournemouth is not happy and sad because they lose a key player,” Tuchel said.

“But I can just say from the moment we took the decision to let him play, there was absolutely no risk whatsoever apparent to me or our physical staff that we have a risk of an injury.”

Tuchel insisted that communications between medical teams at England and Bournemouth had been a “totally open process”, stressing that Premier League sides must place their trust in the national setup.

Ezri KOnsa has also left the England camp (PA Wire)

“I’m not involved in discussions with clubs how to use them,” he added.

“I think the players are for two-and-a-half weeks our players and, as much as we trust the clubs to put the players’ health first, I think the clubs have to trust us that we put the players’ health first.

“You can see it in our team selections and that will never change, but we are not on the phone to clubs asking for advice because then it would be an empty camp by now.

“It’s four matches for us and this is the most important thing. For these two-and-a-half weeks, these four matches matter more than anything else. It is an honour, a pride to play for your country. This is where the focus is.”
